Functional Medicine for Digestion and Health

Hi, I’m Dr. Emily Anderson Elder, a board certified physician who after ten years in traditional family medicine, pivoted her career to functional medicine in order to help patients prevent disease before it starts.  I help families thrive and achieve optimal health by addressing digestion, lifestyle and preventative medicine.

In a fast paced world, I strive to slow down and take the time to know my patients.  Your health is based on not only your diagnoses but also who you are as a person. So join me in pursuing your health.  Be resilient, ever growing.  Mint.

Digestive Health

Whether you’re struggling with digestive issues or perhaps just generalized symptoms such as fatigue, joint pain, weight gain, etc, addressing your gut can be helpful.

Other Services

I am also trained to evaluate and treat a variety of other issues using a holistic and western medicine approach.  These include fatigue, thyroid disorders, diabetes, joint pain, weight/metabolism issues, etc.

Dr. Emily Anderson Elder MD

I have practiced traditional family medicine for the past ten years.  However, my approach seemed more reactive than proactive, and thus, I pursued further training in functional medicine through the Kresser Institute ADAPT training program.

I am also a patient.  I was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome when I was in grade school and, unfortunately, failed multiple traditional medical treatments.  When I discovered and learned about functional medicine, I finally found solutions that worked.  God put purpose into my pain; I had determination to find treatments that could not only help me but also you!

My Philosophy

“Stop Acting So Small.  you are the universe in ecstatic motion.”    ~rumi

Traditional western medicine leads the world in urgent health needs and we are lucky to have it.  If we have a heart attack, traumatic car accident, stomach ulcer, etc., we would want western medicine on our side.  However, after a decade practicing Family medicine, I came to realize it may not be the best at preventative health.  Give us western medicine docs a diagnosis and we’ll treat it quickly with medications or procedures.  But how do we keep someone healthy so they never venture down the road of illness?  That’s where functional medicine comes in.

Functional Medicine is a combination of both conventional and alternative medicine.  It focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of disease in a holistic way.  Functional medicine not only looks at your test results but also takes into account your environment, lifestyle and genes.  It is an individualized approach to your health care.

At Mint MD, we believe that digestive health is the center point for overall health.  At Mint MD, we will explore your nutrition, lifestyle, and environment but also extensive preventative labs and digestive testing.  As an MD who has pursued additional training in functional medicine, I am equipped to know when findings may be urgent and require more immediate western medicine techniques but will always prefer to use lifestyle changes and natural supplements if possible.  Functional medicine training also allows me to look at your testing in a new light…to identify subtle changes to ward off disease before it starts.
